I am so blessed to have Kevin as my husband – for more reasons than I can count – but especially because we love doing things together. Whatever it is, it is more fun because he is with me as my best friend. And so after our 25th wedding anniversary back in May was spent with me in radiation and chemo, we decided to plan an actual anniversary celebration, and thus came about our four day getaway to New York City over Columbus Day weekend. (We love New York, and it had been five years since we had been there last.)

On Friday morning, we were at the airport a 4 am for our flight to NYC. We had a fantastic view of the Statue of Liberty as we flew into LaGuardia.

One of the parts of this weekend was for Kevin to play golf in New Jersey with his buddy Kevin, which meant that we had a giant golf bag carrier along with our luggage as we made our way through public transportation ๐. Kevin was a trooper on the bus to the subway station, going up and down stairs in the subways (neither of those bags were light), and hanging onto them so they didn’t fall over – or so he didn’t fall over.

Eventually we were at the Bryant Park area near our hotel, which meant that Kevin had all the luggage out in the streets, which was a little better. And i tried really hard not to get left behind because of my need to take pictures of everything. I mean, you just can’t beat the lions at the New York Public Library ๐.

Eventually, we got to our hotel and checked in, which meant we were free from the giant bags – ha ha! We also have a spectacular view of the Empire State Building out of our window!
Since we were no longer encumbered, we finally had the free time to get some food. We were starving!! We walked to a place we have loved before called The Little Pie Shop. We shared a yummy chicken potpie and then got dessert pie for later on.

After that, we were able to meet up with our awesome friends, Amy and Kevin. We hung out, talked, planned, and then had a quick dinner at Blacktop Burger before Kevin and I headed to the broadway show we were attending and they went to a special concert and light show at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Kevin and I went to Schmigadoon, a show we had heard amazing things about (and we had watched the TV show it was based on). It even won the Tony for best musical.

It did not disappoint. In fact, it was spectacular – the dancing, the singing, the humor. It was so much fun!!

It was pretty late when we got back to our hotel room, and when we opened the door, there was a horrible noise. The giant swinging hinge on the door popped out of the door. We couldn’t even open the door. After a very action packed day, waking up at 3am to get to the airport, and everything else, all I wanted to do was eat my pie and go to bed. Instead, we had to wait to get a new room, have someone take the thing off the door, etc. etc. etc. We couldn’t even unpack.

Eventually, we finally got into our new room (with double beds instead of a king, but at that moment, we just wanted a place to sleep). I did enjoy the view of the Empire State Building out the window while we waited. It had a light show happening.

When we woke up, I noticed that our view was even better, now that we were up on the 19th floor. I guess there was one good thing in all that mess with switching rooms ๐. Good times. In spite of how it ended, it was an amazing day.
