We had the most wonderful start to our weekend! My sister Cheryl and her husband Scott were in the area as they were heading home from a two month road trip. They were able to come over for dinner and stay for the evening – even joining us for scripture study. It was so wonderful, and even though it was only for a few hours, it was a true gift!

The next day, Kevin and I went to the San Antonio Temple together. It was freezing cold, as a massive storm front is coming in, but luckily it held off until later on. It was so strange to have the temple be so empty on a Saturday, but many people have to travel from far away and were trying to avoid the storm. They were even closing the temple a few hours early.

And the storm did come. It actually was a “polar vortex” that was going across the country and causing all sorts of issues because of extreme cold and moisture. We had sleet, a little snow, and then very cold temps, which led to everything being covered in a layer of ice.

Arthur had to check it out when he woke up, and although you can’t tell in the picture, under that tiny dusting of snow is a layer of ice. They even canceled church, because it was unsafe to travel on the roads.

Since we didn’t have church, Derek decided to make a special treat for breakfast – Brown Sugar Muffins. Yum!

We were able to have our family Come Follow Me study with Lily and my mom. Poor Lily has been really sick, and it turned out that she had the flu! Poor girl couldn’t lift up her head and could barely talk, but it was great to have her join with us.

On Monday, even though the main roads were starting to clear, the neighborhood roads were still pretty solid ice, and so school was canceled. Arthur spent most of the day playing with the ice – especially any icicles he could find. The weather was still pretty freezing though.

I took advantage of having extra time at home to get some things accomplished – like vacuuming my bedroom. I also facetimed with my friend Alison and we planned our next science unit together. It was fabulously productive.

And after a nap, I was able to do some baking. I made lemon pound cake and cinnamon swirl bread. Although the cinnamon bread fell apart, it was delicious! The pound cake I was saving for some special things coming up, so all three of those loaves went into the freezer.

So although I was not at all planning on an inclement weather day to mess up a lot of my school plans for the week, it ended up being a blessing in many ways.
