Like so many things this year, because of the quarantine, Kevin’s and my long awaited anniversary getaway was postponed/canceled. We were unsure how or when we might be able to reschedule our trip, but then everything came together for us to go this past week.  Wednesday morning, as soon as Arthur left for school, Kevin and I were on the road and headed to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for three nights away.

The drive was nice and uneventful, and we even found a Cook Out along the way to get burgers and their amazing milkshakes.  When we arrived, we got checked in and settled into the lovely condo that would be our home for the next few days.

My favorite part of the condo was the screened in balcony with a view of the pond. It was such a wonderful place to sit and read or relax over the next few days.

For dinner, we decided to walk to a nearby Brazilian Steakhouse, and it was a great choice!  We hadn’t been to one in ages, and the food was amazing.

We even brought home some Key Lime pie for dessert, for when we weren’t so stuffed we thought we’d explode – ha ha! We got to enjoy it while we watched Big Brother in our hotel room.

On Thursday, we were up bright and early to go and play golf.  We played at a really awesome course called “World Tour,” because all of its holes were recreations of famous holes from around the world.

Sadly, it was the FIRST time I had touched my clubs this year.  I blame Covid, and the fact that we didn’t do our usual gold clinics for the kids this summer, which meant I wasn’t out at the driving range all summer long.  Oh well.  I wasn’t too terrible, but I was very sore. (You use muscles in your arms and hands that you really rarely use otherwise.)

The course was beautiful and so much fun! I loved reading about each different hole we were playing, and what it was patterned after.

Sometimes we got into trouble, although usually that was me – I lost quite a few balls due to thick bushes, grass and water.  Once though, Kevin had to hit it through two trees to get it out on the fairway, and he did it.

The water has always seemed to be my nemesis, but this shot just barely didn’t go in the water.  And on the island green that was patterned after Sawgrass, I actually made it on the green!!!  I was so shocked and excited, and even though it totally rolled off the other side of the green into the water, nothing could take away my achievement of getting on there in the first place.

We truly had a fabulous time, and the twosome of local guys we played with were very kind and fun.  I love getting to do things like this with Kevin.

After golfing, we were both starving, and we found a fantastic place to eat lunch – Carolina Roadhouse.  Kevin had the chili cheese fry dog, and I had the chicken strips, both of which were enough food to feed our whole family.  Luckily we had a full kitchen in our condo, so we could save our leftovers to eat another time.

One of the things I was looking forward to the most, was getting to go to the beach, and so after a quick nap, we headed off to enjoy the beach.

There is something truly magical about the soothing sound of the waves, and the feel of the sand between your toes.  We spent over an hour there just soaking it in.

I wandered around and enjoyed the peace of it all, and even though there were still quite a lot of people there at the beach, it was still so nice.

Kevin and I both searched for fun shells to bring home to Arthur, and we found some really great ones because the tide was out.  Kevin even ventured a little bit into the water, but it was way too cold for me.

There really were so many shells visible, and we found some really great ones.  It was the perfect little gift for Arthur.

After the beach, we went to a local Italian restaurant that was delicious, and then we came home and watched a movie. Friday morning, I got up and decided to walk through the resort and explore as I exercised.  They have fountains and ponds throughout the area, and I kept seeing the most beautiful White Ibis. It reminded me of when we lived in Savannah.

That morning, we had to sit through a time share presentation thing. – so. boring, but worth it for the deal on the condo. By the time it was over, the rain had come, which was fine, because we were planning on shopping in the afternoon.  We went to an outdoor mall, and found a yummy restaurant and had crepes. Both of us opted for savory crepes, and they were delicious.

We went to the PGA Store for Kevin, and wandered in some other cool shops, and then picked up some donuts from Peace, Love and Little Donuts.  They are mini donuts and they totally customize them for you.  And they were so good!  We also picked up fudge from another. shop to bring home to the kids.

When we got back to our condo, the rain had stopped, and so we decided to grab our putters and go play at the little mini-golf course at the resort.  The weather held, we were the only ones out there, and so we played a 36 hole match play tournament.  We had so much fun, and even though there were times, especially in the beginning that I might actually win, Kevin came in and won it all in the end.  And of course, we had to get a picture of Kevin being eaten by the alligator to send to our kids – ha ha!

After the mini golf, we had another leisurely evening watching a movie – and eating our donuts. On Saturday morning, we packed up, filled the car up with gas, and headed home to the kids. It was perfect get away, and just the recharge I have been needing. 

**By the way, how it possible that gas in South Carolina is a whole dollar cheaper than it. is in Pennsylvania??  Crazy!
