On Sunday evening, as I was helping Lily make a video for a school project, and Kevin was making dinner, the power went out.  All over the entire neighborhood, not just our house.  And because it is dark by 5 pm, it was pitch black dark.

I went and got our good flashlight and the kids and I went downstairs to join Kevin, who had just added raw eggs to the dish he was making us, and now they were sitting there not cooking.  Seriously, he would have been done if only the power had gone out only a couple minutes later.

By this time, the kids were freaking out a little (and they were starving), and so I made them peanutbutter sandwiches and Kevin let them play Angry Birds Star Wars on his iPad, which calmed them right down.

Meanwhile, Kevin and I were trying to come up with a way to finish cooking dinner, finally deciding to try and finish it up in a pan on our gas grill.  We were thwarted, however, as the gas ran out right then, and our extra tank was sitting empty in the garage, because I kept forgetting to take it to the store and exchange it.

Just as we were about to give up on the power coming back on, and our house was starting to get really cold, the power came back on.  What a blessing.  Kevin finished dinner (an hour after it would have been done), and the kids were very happy to have light again.

What it taught me, is that I may have emergency supplies, but I should probably know WHERE they are, and that  an emergency heater and gas grill won't help you if you have no propane.  Guess I need to be better prepared for the future :).
