Now we all know that Derek is a little young for a Pinewood Derby (5 more years until Cub Scouts), and so when our ward decided to have a ward Pinewood Derby, Kevin immediately started making cars for the kids, even though he knew he wouldn't be there to enjoy it with them.
First, he found all sorts of pictures of pinewood derby cars on the internet to give them some ideas, and once the kids made their decisions, he set out to make their visions a reality :). This took a lot of creative problem solving, which luckily, Kevin is an expert at, and soon we had a make-shift work table and two cars on their way to becoming awesome!
He left them all ready to go, and gave me instructions as to how I was supposed to lubricate the wheels, or something like that. (I don't think I really did it right, but it's all good.) Unfortunately, because of swimming lessons, we were not going to make it to the race, and so we sent our cars without us and crossed our fingers they would do well.
After swimming lessons (notice the water-logged look of my kids), we raced over to the church, and since the race was over, Lily and Derek got to spend 45 minutes just playing with their cars on the track. They had a blast, even after Derek broke a wheel off of his car, and still tried to race it down the track :).
And hey, a little bird told me that we would have won it all with Derek's car, if it hadn't been for Chris Damato's super speedy racer. Lily did win a prize though, the "Plain Jane" award, which I promptly told her was really the "Fancy Jane" award. (Who on earth would think a 5 year old girl would want her car called plain? Could they not see the flowers she drew all over it? It's all good though – I think they just had set prizes and wanted to give her one.)
Here she is with her prize, a Hershey's bar – yum!
