Saturday we set out for Atlanta for our Wicked adventure, and it was fabulous. It was hard to believe it was actually happening, since Victoria and I had been planning and scheming to get to see it ever since they first moved here. And what made the day even more exciting, was when an extra ticket became available, and so of course, we took . . . Lily!
The day began with Kevin and John playing their traditional game of Guitar Hero (which lasted the whole four hours), while I drove. Victoria and I listened to theWicked soundtrack, talked, and laughed at all the cute and funny things Lily did on the way. I even managed to find the theater in downtown Atlanta without getting too lost or getting us killed :).
We went early so that we could get some lunch before the matinee performance, and decided on The Broadway Diner, for Lily. It was right next door to the theater, and so they were playing the Wicked soundtrack on the sound system. Lily was so excited about it, that she turned to our waitress and said, "Thank you for playing the Wicked music!" (She thought they were doing it just for us. So cute!) She also made sure to tell everyone we passed that she got to skip her soccer game and piano lessons to come :).
As we walked back to the theater, we passed a street performer playing a trumpet – one of Lily's favorite instruments – and so Kevin gave her some money to give him. Lily immediately charmed him, and before we knew it, he was playing the Sesame Street theme song and Lily was soft shoeing to the music :). So fun!
Next, we entered the Fox Theater, and it was beautiful! It was themed in a middle Eastern Arabian Nights theme, complete with a night sky (Lily's favorite). The bathrooms were like caverns that went on forever, and Lily was especially impressed with the "make-up room." It was all very fancy and beautiful, but we had to laugh when we saw people walking to their seats with popcorn and beer. Really?! I told Kevin that it must be a redneck version of going to a Broadway play. (And yes, we bought Lily some popcorn – he he!)
The play itself was spectacular! I loved it, and the performers were wonderful. I loved the fact that it filled in a lot of blanks in the story, especially since I had read the book, and wanted to know how it was different. (By the way, the play was so much better than the book. Although there were a few things missing or changed in the story I was sad about, for the most part, they took out all the weird creepy things from the book to make a great story.)
All in all, it was such a fantastic experience and another great adventure with the Colver's. Lily is still talking about when Elpheba flew in "Defying Gravity." I still have all the songs running through my head, and now I can picture the scenes and characters to go with it, which is awesome. And Kevin even really enjoyed it too.
