Last night Lily and I finished reading Little House in the Big Woods, by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  We have been reading it together each night for the past two weeks, and it has been such a fun experience.   We have always read stories at night, but this was only my third attempt at reading her a chapter book.  (The first two we read were Winnie the Pooh and Mr. Poppers Penguins – both of which she loved.)  This time is was just a little more special, as I thought back to memories of my own mother reading me the Little House books.

She loved learning about all the things they did, like making cheese, sugar snow, and putting their hair up in rags.  In fact, she liked the part about curling their hair with rags so much, that we decided to try it Saturday night.  It was the cutest thing ever, and she was SO patient while I did it.  The results were gorgeous too.  I sure love having these special moments with her, especially because she is growing up way too fast, and before I know it, she will be reading to her own children.

PS.  Lily also gets plenty of special times with her daddy, whether it is watching "Trick my Truck" or building things.  The other day they built Kevin's Christmas Legos, and she loved every minute of it :).

What a wonderful way to bring literature to life! Thanks for sharing!
My dad told us made up stories when we were little. Then in his wisdom, realized that I wouldn’t be so sulky in my teen years if he read to me every night. I treasure that time I had with my dad, so don’t ever plan on giving it up!

Lily looks adorable with rag curls – like a little American Girl doll.
This post made me so anxious to have my own daughter someday – you doing all the things I want to do! I’m so glad that Lily enjoys listening to chapter stories.

What a wonderful memory for both of you! I love thinking about the times when my parents would read to me before I went to sleep. My favorites were always poetry books by Shel Silverstein and Little Women.

Cute hair. I think I’m going to start Little House on the Prairie with my kids…lately we have been loving mystery books–the A to Z mysteries. When Emily was 4 her favorite read aloud chapter books were the My Father’s Dragon trilogy–they are really good!

I love Lily’s hair! I tried Abi’s hair in rag curlers, but they didn’t turn out too well. After seeing your results, I’m going to try again! I’m glad that Lily loves books, they bring such good feelings and make wonderful memories.

Lily will be the luckiest little girl to have this kind of history to reflect on representing her parents love for her! You guys are the greatest parents 🙂

And can I just say how gorgeous Lily is!!! Seriously, what a beautiful little girl.
(and to answer your question about Zach’s pictures, I just use a black back drop that I got off ebay a few years ago. It’s a pretty thin material, but with the right settings it looks pretty sharp. I still want to get something heavier though, like velvet maybe?)

Good for you–being a reading family! That’s great. And her hair is beautiful! It makes me want to put my short, straight, brown, college-girl hair up in rags, too!
