Yesterday was "Pirate Day" – a special holiday Kevin created back in college – it's a long story. Luckily for us, it also happened to be Martin Luther King Day this year, and since Kevin had work off and Lily didn't have school, we decided to celebrate.
And what better way to celebrate than a trip to Charleston, SC – one of the biggest Pirate ports ever :). So we planned our day, with a trip to the South Carolina Aquarium and Costco – of course. (If you want a great explanation for why we drive all the way to Costco when there are two Sam's Clubs in Savannah, go here and look at the Jan 19th entry.)
In true Pirate fashion, Kevin and Lily had to dress for the occasion, and although Lily was sad she didn't have her own eye patch, she loved the red bandanna :). She also said the funniest thing as we were leaving, "Pirates always need help getting their coats on." Silly girl.
Kevin also had to take road trip mode to the limit, and so while I drove, he experimented with the features of our amazing van, and he played Guitar Hero the whole way there.
Talk about spoiled, but it's all good, because now he thinks I really am the greatest wife ever :).
When we arrived at the aquarium, we were very happy that Lily had chosen it over the zoo, because it was freezing!!! It was only 30 degrees, which is VERY cold for this area, and being right on the ocean, it made it colder. Needless to say we were happy to be safe inside :).
It was very fun, and the highlights were: the baby sea turtles – so cute!!, the creepy eel that came out, when usually it stays hidden, the sharks, and for Derek – the slide at their little park. We also had a great view of an aircraft carrier in the harbor, which was awesome.
When we were done there, we decided to go straight to Costco, since we didn't want to linger in the cold. We stocked up, and then headed home, this time with Kevin driving :). I did play Trivial Pursuit with him on the way home (His PDA has a computer version of it), and miracle of miracles, I WON! That just goes to show you that anything is possible when the questions are all multiple choice – even defeating the King of Trivial Pursuit.
We ended the day with a Costco Cake, one of Kevin's favorite things. He tried to change the words from "happy birthday" to "Happy Pirate Day" to appease Lily. It was a great way to end a great day :).
PS. And I wanted to share this with y'all yesterday on actual Pirate Day, but this will have to do. Here goes:
