Even though we spent the bulk of Kevin's days off working and organizing our apartment, we did take the opportunity to have fun along the way. Kevin got out to play golf – in the rain, but at least it wasn't crowded :). (I've seen him play golf in the snow, what does rain matter to him?)
One afternoon Kevin not only let me go out with my friend Jen to watch a movie, but he even watched her son along with our kids. (Her husband was in Alaska, and so it was great for her as well as me.) We went to see Becoming Jane, the movie about Jane Austin, and it was so very good! Anne Hathaway was amazing.
On Labor Day we had a BBQ and went swimming with our friends Dawn and Robert. Lily was so excited to play with their girls (ages 4 and 3), especially since our vacations this summer were so opposite that we hadn't seen each other since we got together on the 4th of July. We had such a fun time, and are so glad we are all back in town.
Last, but definitely not least, was our trip to Atlanta to see the NY Mets play the Braves. Kevin is a huge Mets fan, and so for one of his b-day presents, we got tickets to an Atlanta Braves game at Turner Field for when the Mets were in town.
We left early in the morning to drive the 4 hrs there and make it in time for the 1pm start time, and drove through a torrential downpour almost the whole way. We were so worried it would be raining in Atlanta and the game would be delayed. We were so blessed though, because not only was there no rain, but it was only in the low 80S (the coolest it has been here in months) with a nice breeze. After spending an hour trying to find the correct parking lot, we made it into the stadium. It was so exciting! We just stood there a while soaking it all in – the field, the players, the huge drum they would play if the Braves did something good, etc.
When we found our seats, things got even better. We were very low down – 2nd tier – and were right by one of the foul poles, so we had an awesome view of the game and the Mets dugout. It was so fun to see them in person. It reminded me a lot when we used to go to the Laker's games when they would come and play the Jazz. When we first got there, I told Kevin that David Wright, "my boyfriend" – as Kevin likes to tease me – would hit a home run for me. And he did!! I got to see Jose Reyes (so cute) try to steal some bases, and we watched Tom Glavin pitch, which was great. It was amazing to me how loud it was when the ball hit the mitt during a pitch. We had a lot of fun taking pictures with my camera and zoom lense.
The kids were so great too, playing and watching the game. Derek was so entertained by climbing on and off of his seat, that he didn't need much else to keep him busy.
Lily participated in all the fun things the announcer had them do – clapping and cheering along. And to show you what a sucker Kevin is for his baby girl, he bought her a Braves tomahawk, even though he hates the Braves. He he! He also got her some cotton candy, but finally drew the line when she started asking for every little thing she saw anyone with. Lily also got her picture taken with some of the Braves cheerleaders, because why not? :)
The greatest thing was when she heard the little boys behind us cheering for the Braves. A look of horror came over her face, and she promptly told them, "We don't want the Braves to win! We want the Mets to win! Mom, they are cheering for the wrong team!" As I tried to keep a straight face, I explained to her that those boys were allowed to like the Braves, because even her Uncle Preston likes them best. She didn't seem to buy it, but it sure made for a great laugh for the people sitting by us. Kevin has been training her since birth to be a Mets fan :).
The only difficult thing the entire time was trying to figure out where we were supposed to get the food that came with our package deal. I ended up trekking all over the entire stadium, with Derek in tow, no less, until I finally found someone who knew what was up. By the time I found out the info, the place was closed, and so the NICEST man from guest relations took me to a food stand, loaded me up with not only the food we were supposed to get, but extra, and then he carried it all to my seat for me. Wow! It definitely made up for my troubles.
I could go on and on about our adventure. All in all it was such an amazing time. Worth every penny and driving through the storm. We got home that night having had a practically perfect day.
