On Friday afternoon, Lily finally had her 4 yr old well child visit and shots.  These are usually quite low key, especially since Lily doesn't mind shots and loves going to the doctor.  Kevin got to come with us, which was wonderful, since it meant he could chase Derek – and what a blessing that turned out to be, because it turned out to be anything but a routine visit . . .

First, the doctor heard a heart murmur and was quite concerned about it – we aren't sure when it developed exactly, but know she didn't have it last year.  For that, she is giving us a referral to a cardiologist, and ordered a chest x-ray.  Then, when she looked in Lily's ears, she saw an ear infection!  Crazy!  Lily has only ever had two before, and wasn't complaining at all.  Then she tells me that they have started to do routine blood tests at these yearly visits to check for anemia.  And to top it all off, Lily had complained a tiny bit about her "bum hurting," and so she was going to have to pee in a cup.

This was all on top of the four shots she then had to get, and so we started getting things taken care of.  I sent Kevin off to get Lily's prescriptions, and I took her for the shots.  She was very brave, and even though she cried for a minute with the pain, she then turned and thanked the technician who gave them to her.  She also decided to put the stickers they gave her on top of the band aides, and so her legs were covered in stickers.

After the x-rays, I met up with Kevin and realized they forgot one of her prescriptions, and so we traded and I went off to track down the doctor to get the other one put in, while Kevin had the "pleasure" of helping Lily with her lab work, which included, if you remember, helping her pee in a cup.  (I think I definitely got the better deal, even though I had to change Derek's nasty diaper at the time.)

After that was done, we got the last prescription, picked up her x-rays to take with us, and finally got to leave.  We definitely ran the gauntlet, and Lily was such a trooper through it all, that we took her to a special dinner at Texas Roadhouse – her favorite :).

PS.  Probably the best and funniest part of the whole experience was driving to the clinic.  It is a pretty curvy road we come in on, and Lily has been obsessed with the curvy road sign.  So we started talking about which way we would turn toward – left or right.  After helping her remember which side was left by telling her that her left hand makes an "L" she said to us, "Now we need to trun right, which starts with a backwards L" – what do you do, but laugh?
